It always happens this time of year...

Around dusk, dinnertime, usually a pretty calm time in my house. Not last night! Screaching from outside startled me from my glass du jour and I knew it before I saw - the cats (Calvin & Hobbes) caught a bird. They do it in pairs - they are nothing if not a team of seasoned predators. I bolted, spilled my wine, and headed for the screaching sound of parent birds. The brave wrens were diving bombing the cats, then me. Im just glad no one has it on youTube yet.
Its always the quiet ones
Of course it was a baby bird - its feathers not fully formed, so it couldn't fly well enough. Maybe it fell from its nest. I think my little monsters climbed the tree and nabbed it though. Take heart, dear readers, Im used to this. I pounced on both cats, got the baby, got bit, then pecked some more by mad parents, and said, "Now what the Hell do I do"? Mr. Vintage dragged the shocked and wicked mad cats in the house and I was left with what to do. I put him way on top of my hill under the deep forsythia bushes. This is where the parents were now waiting. I checked several time during the evening to see if he was still there.  He was. Parents still chirping nearby.

This morning, cats needed to go out. So, up at 5am, I checked everywhere for the baby. Can't find him - parents are still there, chirping alarmingly - so I know he's somewhere close by. As do Calvin & Hobbes. I figure I may have to take him, if I find him again - put this old vintage cage to use and nurse him for another week or so until his feathers come in and he is strong enough to fly on his own. I have had to do this a few times now and am getting quite good at feeding birdies canned dog food on toothpicks every 30 minutes. Its the other end that freaks me out. aaahh Spring:)

Have a great week everyone ~ Joining these wonderful parties this week:

  1. Oh gosh Dee, You're a good 'bird mom'. I have had to do that too. Luckly for me Sophia likes to catch moles and chipmonks the best:) And since the chipmonks come in my house and cause havok, they're on their own. lol Hope you are having a great week:)

  3. Cats are hunters and are just doing what they do. Mine brought a lizard, alive, in his mouth into the kitchen the other day. He also eats whole squirrels.

  4. Our cats often bring n little birds....and it drives me absolutely mad. I know it's in their nature but every time it astonishes me how our cats can go from adorable and purry to killers. Grrrrr.

  5. Oh Dee... I don't know whether to say poor you or that you're wonderful for saving the little birdie. We had a stray kitten show up just before Winter hit last year. Since we're all allergic, she couldn't come inside. We tried and tried to find a home for her but she ended up on our back porch, living under the bench. We covered it with blankets and fed her each day. Now our stray has had a litter of kitties. *sigh* And the kids are so attached. I may need your bird saving skills soon. =)
